Software Engineer Intern
Fox & Co — Motion for Mobile
Fox & Co is a Wellington, New Zealand animation studio known as the "Makers of eMotion," recognized for 2D/3D animation, explainer videos, and motion graphics. I interned on the engineering side of an early, unreleased product exploration internally called Motion for Mobile: a concept for a self-serve service for fast, professional, social-ready video content that never made it to market.
The brief
Fox & Co wanted to explore what a self-serve, mobile-first product could look like alongside their bespoke animation work: something a brand could use to get "fun, fresh, dynamic and snackable" video content without commissioning a full campaign each time. My job was to figure out, technically, what that product could actually be. I started by soliciting business and software requirements directly from non-technical stakeholders on the creative side, translating what they wanted the product to feel like into something I could actually scope and build.
Prototyping the product
I researched and built a working prototype in React Native against the Google Firebase API, covering both the mobile and desktop-facing sides of the idea. That engineering work stayed internal to the studio and was never released; the visuals on this page are concept art Fox & Co's own creative team produced internally around the same product direction.
Recommending the stack
Alongside the prototype, I documented a feature-complete wireframe and the reasoning behind it in Figma and Notion: the screens, the interaction logic connecting them, and a recommendation for the technology underneath, so the team had a concrete, technically-grounded starting point for whatever they decided to build next.
Where it landed
Motion for Mobile never shipped. Fox & Co's creative team took the concept further internally (script, art direction, 3D animation, brand identity, and an original score), but it was never released publicly and the product never came to market. My internship sat earlier in that pipeline, on the technical and UX exploration that helped the team scope what the product would need to do if it had moved forward.
